Fleet-wide booking volumes, excluding Costa, declined “in the mid teens'' following the disaster through Jan. 25, bottoming out Jan. 16, Carnival revealed Monday.

At least 17 people died after the ship ran aground, with another 16 still missing. The ship remains partially submerged off the Italian coast and, on Monday, all rescue efforts officially ended.

Since the disaster, Carnival announced a review of safety and emergency response procedures across its entire fleet. The Miami-based company owns nine cruise ship brands including the Cunard Line, Holland America, and Princess. Costa Concordia represents 1.5% of Carnival's overall feet capacity.

Cruise watchers have been looking to see what, if any, impact the Costa Concordia cruise ship sinking would have on cruise booking. Though it's too early to determine any long-term effects, indicators show that sales remain strong.

Statistically, cruising remains one of the safest vacation options, which may account for why few travelers canceled existing trips in the wake of the Costa Concordia disaster.

“It is very sad,” one writer noted in an open forum on cruise site CruiseMates. “But it isn't changing any of my cruise plans.”

Cruise.co.uk, Britain's largest online cruise agent, reported 150,000 searches in the week following the disaster – just 7,000 fewer than the previous week.

Another European site, Cruise118, boasted a 10 percent increase on 2011 numbers while North American sites CruiseOne and Cruises.com posted gains of six percent.

Vicky Mary, president of Cincinnati-based Victoria Travel, said she hasn't booked Costa in several years but agreed cruise sales for both Europe and elsewhere remained normal.

“I booked a cruise today and I'll book another tomorrow,” Mary said.

She was adamant people shouldn't be worried about safety.

“When you listen to the people who built these new ships, I mean, they're built incredibly well. I think that people understand that this is an anomaly. People see that the big ships are incredible. They're like living in a fantasy. I mean they replicate cities – how cool is that?”

January is typically part of what is known as “Wave Season,” the most active cruise booking period of the year known for special offers from most of the major lines. Wave Season can last for a few weeks or more depending on what bargains are in place and how severe the winter weather becomes.

Things to Consider Before Taking a Cruise:

Know Your Personal Health before you leave on a cruise. Cover all your bases and check your itinerary to ensure you have the proper vaccines for the regions you'll visit. Bring as much documentation and information as possible because, though every ship has a doctor on board, levels of training vary from ship to ship. Most doctors are also considered contractors and as such are not employees of the cruise line. This can create a legal grey area if something goes wrong.

Traveler's Insurance covers a variety of trip-related problems from lost luggage to emergency cancellations. Cruise ships do, however, create some unique situations that are best discussed with your provider before you take a trip. For example, find out of your coverage includes things like helicopter evacuations.

The Reputation of a Cruise Line can tell a lot about its operating procedures. Before you book, research the safety and sanitation of various liners. In the U.S., the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has records of cruise ship inspections under its Vessel Sanitation Program that are available to the public.

Know the Ship's Layout before you set sail and familiarize yourself with the emergency procedures. Take note of the location of your life preservers, what lifeboat you are assigned to, and the meaning of the ship's emergency signals. Every ship is required by law to hold a fire and lifeboat drill with passengers within the first 24 hours and it is imperative that you attend.

Mardi Gras puts spotlight on the ‘art of the mask’

In Stanley Kubrick’s final film, “Eyes Wide Shut,” actor Tom Cruise wanders through a country mansion where members of a bizarre upscale cult are engaged in various erotic pursuits. The sequence is all the more discomfiting because the revelers wear a bewildering (and sinister) array of masks.

For at least 9,000 years the mask has been an object of mystery, ritual or theatrical performance. From Poe’s “Masque of the Red Death” to the graphic novel and film “V for Vendetta” to the Lone Ranger, Zorro and the disfigured composer in “Phantom of the Opera,” it is all about the mask.

The allure is undeniable and the history long and colorful — and profitable for the savvy folks who cashed in on the “Halloween” and “Friday the 13th” franchises. Thank you, Michael Myers; much obliged, Jason Voorhees. Who knew that a hockey mask could terrify movie audiences?

Gulf Coast residents have a somewhat different take, especially during Carnival season. Down here, the mask means there’s a party going on — or soon will be. For two wild ¤’n’ crazy weeks, libidos are unchained and in a relentless and hedonistic pursuit of pleasure. Let the good times roll.

10546385 large Mardi Gras puts spotlight on the art of the maskArtist Maura Odom with the first mask she ever created. (Press-Register/G.M. Andrews)

That spirit of exuberance, and a well-honed sense of humor, is evident in a variety of masks one finds in local shops and galleries. From downtown to the Eastern Shore, the mask is a familiar symbol of Mardi Gras. (See information box.)

Cathedral Square Gallery in downtown Mobile exhibits colorful and ornate masks by Maura Odom and mask watercolors by Denise Inge.

Odom has been making Mardi Gras masks for three years, ever since she and a friend created their own before they drove to New Orleans. Her black-and-white mask caused a sensation.

“In New Orleans everybody asked where I got it, and they wanted to buy it,” Odom says. “My parents saw it and said I should start making masks and selling them. I started doing it for decorations and people wanted to buy them, so I started selling them that way.”

She says her materials inspire her designs.

“I might find one piece that I really love and design around it,” she says. “I use papier-mâché, plastic, fabric, metal, beads, feathers, paint, ribbon, wire, pieces of jewelry, Swarovski crystals — anything goes.”

10546382 large Mardi Gras puts spotlight on the art of the maskMasks by Maura Odom at Cathedral Square Gallery in Mobile. (Press-Register/G.M. Andrews)

Although some of Odom’s more striking creations are in the Venetian style, she does not draw on a specific tradition. “I kind of just make it up as I go,” she says.

She also decorates her masks with flowers and butterflies, and some with black and gold ribbon and fleur-de-lis designs — a hit with New Orleans Saints fans. Each of her pins, like the masks, are unique. No two are alike, although her Crimson Tide masks — covered in houndstooth and festooned in school colors — are especially popular in the wake of another BCS championship.

In addition to her masks, Odom creates pins with tiny ceramic masks, bits of ribbon and old jewelry. These pieces can be worn as brooches or pendants. She describes them as “a little piece of Mardi Gras.”

Her work is also affordable, which is the way Odom prefers it.

“I think everybody should have the opportunity to own art,” she says. “It’s important to have (art) in your life, and I really try hard to make my work affordable.”

Odom is a Mobile native and attended Corpus Christi and McGill-Toolen; she is a graduate of the University of South Alabama, where she earned a degree in theater design with an emphasis in costuming and makeup. At USA she worked on costumes for productions of “Alice in Wonderland” and “A Raisin in the Sun,” among other productions.

She also has worked with Santa Fe Opera, Heritage Rep in Charlottesville, Va., and locally for Mobile Theatre Guild, Joe Jefferson Players and Pensacola Opera. Professionally, she is a spa supervisor for the Battle House Hotel and she works part time for Ashland Gallery in Midtown.

Odom says the appeal of Mardi Gras is obvious, and irresistible.

“There are no boundaries,” she says. “Anything goes, everybody is having a good time — it’s a unifying thing for Mobile, I think. It’s just kind of magic.”

David Crowder and Frank Ledbetter take dissimilar approaches to mask-making. Their work can be found at Kangal Gallery in the Sail Loft on North Royal Street.

Crowder is a local designer who specializes in wedding gowns, Mardi Gras costumes and custom-made masks. He learned mask-making from friends who own a shop in Key West, Fla. He uses fabric, feathers, sequins and Swarovski crystals, among other materials. Crowder’s masks have taken many shapes, from a ballet slipper to an artist’s palette.

At this time of year his schedule gets a bit tricky as he tries to find time for his avocation along with the responsibilities of his “day job” as a retail associate and passport agent for the U.S. Post Office.

“Not everybody can be a king or a queen of Carnival,” he says, “but everyone can get a mask to wear or display as art.”

Ledbetter, is a metal sculptor and found-object artist whose work can be found in private homes and public venues through the area. He recently collaborated with Fairhope artist Bruce Larsen on the outsized stainless-steel football sculpture at USA. He also created the sailboat sign, gallery sign and sandwich board for Kangal Gallery.

Gallery owner Susan Steber Kangal spotted Ledbetter’s masks at Serda’s coffeehouse and wanted to exhibit his Mardi Gras masks in her remodeled artspace. Ledbetter, whose commissioned work includes animal designs, tables and other forms, made his masks from discarded engine parts.

“I like to use the Mardi Gras colors — the purple, gold, etc. — because I really enjoy the painting,” he says. “It was kind of like a whim, you know? I didn’t promote it a whole lot, but I sold a couple.”

Stephanie Burks has been making masks for the wall and to wear since childhood.

“I had a mask-making craft book where I created with construction paper,” says Burks, a resident artist at Artology Gallery & Gifts on Cathedral Square. She was one of Mobile’s original “Dirty Girls,” a group of ceramic artists who liked to dig their own clay.

“Masks have always been intriguing to me,” she says. Her experience includes a few masquerade balls while she was in art school, wearing a disguise at Halloween, being part of Carnival in New Orleans on Fat Tuesday.

“I enjoy sculpting clay masks because they serve two purposes,” she says. “They are a work of art and can also be displayed on a wall or in a case.”

Burks started out using papier-mâché and has created mixed-metal masks with copper, aluminum, brass, welding beads and semi-precious stones. She also uses cloth, plaster, clay, resin and wire.

“When I create I’m not really thinking,” she says. “If I have an idea or sketch out a design, it may start that way in my mind but it never comes out that way. I let my hands create — I never really know how something is going to turn out. My mind is free; my hands lead the way.”

Burks’ masks reflect her longtime connection ancient art.

“I have a connection with the trees, the stones, the earth, leaves, spirals, patterns in nature,” she says. “I’m in love with this beautiful planet. I see and feel intense energy from the beauty. . . . I love birds; I love the wind. Feathers are a gift to me (and) the tiniest little flower will bring me to my knees to have a closer look.”

Burks says her clay masks are rolled out with a rolling pin, all handbuilt.

“I form the shape (and) if for a male or female, the size will vary,” she explains. “I can make custom-fit masks, but most people can find the right fit for their face. Once the clay is leather-hard, I will carve or sculpt accents onto the piece.

“Each design varies (with) more intricate pieces from start to finish including glazing, perhaps four hours. My wall masks that are full face and large for hanging take longer depending on the detail I add. I can get very ornate with clay additions, wings, carvings. There usually are two firings in the kiln — both take a total of 12 hours. Bisque is the first firing; glaze is the second.”

Burks’ bird designs are quite popular, but she also creates “green women” and “green men” masks that are very distinctive. “I use a lot of greens, blues, yellows (and) also the Mardi Gras colors,” she says.

“Mardi Gras comes and goes, but people can buy art to display in their homes each year and the decorations have become more elaborate. People leave their Christmas trees (up), then turn them into Mardi Gras trees these days, so the art can be packed up only to come out for next year’s celebrations. Laissez les bons temps rouler!”

Carnival Freedom or Norwegian Epic – Cruise Reviews Forums

1329734949 56 Carnival Freedom or Norwegian Epic Cruise Reviews ForumsOur family is planning a cruise for March 2012 and have narrowed down the list to 2 ships and itineraries. I’m a first time cruiser and looking for advice from experienced cruisers to help me make a final decision. The Epic is a newer boat and will keep my 13 & 17 very busy on the days at sea. But I love the itinerary of the Freedom, and don’t know if there is enough on the boat to keep the kids happy. Mom & Dad will be happy at all the ports, but we want the kids to enjoy everything also. Norwegian is putting out some great offers almost too hard to resist, were as Carnival has no great offers, just great ports. With airfare starting to come out, I have to make a decision soon as one is a seven day cruise and the other is an 8 day. Carnival Freedom-8 days Southern Caribbean-Ft Lauderdale, Sea, Grand Turk Turks & Caicos, La Romana Dominican Republic, Curacao, Aruba, Sea, Sea, Ft Lauderdale Norwegian Epic -7 days Eastern Caribbean-Miami, Sea, Sea,, St. Martin, St Thomas USVI, Sea, Nassau Bahamas, Miami We don’t want to tour or shop, just relax on the beautiful beaches of each port we visit. HELP!

Copenhagen is a city of many charms. This is a freely available strategy to beginning with it. I am still waiting for travel and nobody actually knows anything about it either. Keeping track of expenses, obtaining cheap airfares and hotel stays as well as keeping the expense accounting up to par is not a luxury, it is critical for staying competitive and running an efficient business. This is enough reason to believe that people are always ready to travel and will not let anything stop them from taking trips, especially if they have the money and time for it. The insurance helps travelers replace lost identification and get emergency cash. There are five main kinds of travel insurance. Thus single trip travel insurance is beneficial for those who do not travel frequently as these packages tend to be expensive as compared to annual travel insurance.

‘Carnival Legend’ cruise ship leaving Tampa for most of 2013 – Tampa Bay Times

1329725348 55 Carnival Legend cruise ship leaving Tampa for most of 2013 Tampa Bay Times

The Carnival Legend will be on a European vacation for most of next year, leaving the Tampa port without a seven-day cruise for much of its absence.

Carnival will not be moving another ship to replace the Legend during its absence, which runs from April 2013 to the end of November 2013. The Carnival Paradise, the only other Carnival cruise ship to port in Tampa, will continue to offer four- and five-day cruises to the Caribbean.

Andy Fobes, spokesman for the Tampa Port Authority, said while the number of cruise passengers visiting the port will likely decrease for that time, he is confident that Tampa will continue to be a strong cruise market. The shorter cruises, like those of the Carnival Paradise, tend to sail more frequently and generate more of an economic impact on the area, anyway.

“Carnival Cruise Lines has stated that Tampa — a consistently solid cruise market — is and will continue to be an important part of their business,” he said.

To expand its European cruise itinerary, Carnival will be redeploying the Legend to Dover, England, where it will sail 12-day cruises through the British Isles and the Mediterranean from April through November.

The ship will resume its regular seven-day cruises to the Caribbean from Tampa in December 2013.

Carnival spokesman Vance Gulliksen said the move is part of a new marketing effort in the United Kingdom. In 2014, after the Legend returns to Tampa, the company hopes to be able to deploy a larger ship to Europe. He said the ship’s temporary absence will have no effect on passenger numbers after its return.

Gulliksen said the redeployment of the Legend was unrelated to the loss of the Costa Concordia ship which sank off the coast of Italy in January.

That ship was owned by the same company that owns Carnival Cruise Lines.

Is It Time To Set Sail With Carnival Cruise Line?

1329656948 67 Is It Time To Set Sail With Carnival Cruise Line?

Television screens and newspapers have been inundated by pictures of Costa Cordia listing off the shore of the island of Giglio. While this is a PR nightmare for Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE: CCL), could it be an opportunity for intrepid investors? On Tuesday, the first day the US shares traded after the ship ran aground, the shares tumbled 13.7%. With 780 million shares outstanding, the drop equaled $3.7 billion in market capitalization. On that day, I tweeted that the sell-off was overdone. The shares have since recovered 6.6%. Did you miss the boat? To find out, read on.

After the tragic incident, the company quickly came out to quantify the damage. On Monday, CCL issued a press release stating that the financial impact of the grounding was expected to be $85 – $95 million or $0.11 – $0.12 per share. In addition, the company said that it anticipates “other costs to the business that are not possible to determine at this time.” Analysts who follow the stock seem to believe those other costs are approximately $0.14-$0.15 per share. Full year estimates are now $2.43 down from $2.70 just one week ago. This suggests that the total cost of the incident will be $210 million. At the current price of $31.56, the stock is trading at 13.0x 2012 and 11.3x 2013 estimates. This is up from 12.7x and 11.1x for 2012 and 2013, respectively, before the accident. The multiple is roughly in line with the S&P which currently trades at 12.7x 2012 and 11.5x 2013 earnings.

As an investor, the goal is to protect the downside. The question to ask is what are the unknown costs the company could face? Environmental damages are the largest unknown. Thus far, the fuel recovery appears contained. However, if the situation does take a turn for the worse, who pays? The U.S. Oil Pollution Act of 1990 requires companies to demonstrate the ability to meet the maximum amount of liability to pay for removal costs and damages related to water pollution. In the 10K, the company states that its responsibility is covered by insurance.

There are likely to suits arising from the loss of life. This is no small matter, to date, there have been 11 confirmed deaths with 20 still missing. The downside related to potential suits is covered by the company’s Protection and Indemnity insurance. Moreover, the company has distanced itself from the Captain of the vessel and is now claiming to be an “injured party” (steering of these ships is designed to be almost fool-proof). While insurance costs may increase going forward, as the largest and financially the strongest cruise line, any increase should be manageable.

There is always the potential for lost business. As we seen in the past, despite food poisoning and power outages stranding passengers at sea, the general public still has a fascination with sailing the open waters on larger and larger ships. After all, people didn’t stop going on cruises after the Titanic went down. There was even a recent report that suggested bookings are still coming in despite the accident.

What do the numbers say? Since 2007, available berths on CCL ships grew at a compound annual rate of 6.3%. During that same period, net revenue per available berth has gone from $188.46 in 2006 to $179.33 in 2011. In 2008, gross revenue per available berth hit a high of $195.46 then dropped to $168.94 in 2009. The average over that period was $180.83. The 10 year average is $175.46. With the number of berths slated to slow, the potential to increase the dollars per berth above the five year average and closer to the highs seen in 2008 (a 9% increase) seems reasonable.

EBITDA over the past 5 years dropped from $3.83 billion in 2007 to $3.79 billion in 2011. In 2008, EBITDA reached $3.944 billion then fell 12% to $3.46 billion in 2009. Further, the EBITDA margin has fallen to 24.0% last year from 29.4% in 2007 – averaging 26.6% over that time. The EBITDA margin has been as high as 31.3% in the last ten years. For those that believe in reversion to the mean, margin expansion of 260 basis points would add $403 million to EBITDA an increase of 10.6%.

The stock, as of Friday’s close, yields 3.2%. In 2011 the payout ratio was 35%. With the stable EBITDA, a relatively low payout ratio and fewer ship additions expected, the potential for a dividend increase is significant. In addition, the company has repurchased $2.2 billion of stock in the past five years which is equal to 10% of the current market cap. This demonstrates that management is willing to return excess cash to shareholders.

The stock is down 34% since this time last January. EPS in 2011 was 83% of peak earnings from five years ago. The stock is trading at a slight premium to its book value of $29.04 which should provide additional downside protection. Finally, lowered earnings expectations provide the potential for an upside surprise which could lead to multiple expansion and better returns for intrepid investors seeking to pick up an industry leader on the cheap.

Full disclosure: I have no position in the stock but may purchase shares in the next 72 hours.

Mardi Gras float painter Max Bernardi says it all begins with a sketch

Max Bernardi, a New Orleans muralist and painter has been painting floats and Carnival ball backdrops, on and off, since 1996. As of the last week of January, she was putting the finishing brushstrokes on signature floats like Bacchus’ Bacchagator and Baccha-Whoppa, and Orpheus’ massive Smokey Mary.

10515062 large Mardi Gras float painter Max Bernardi says it all begins with a sketchRUSTY COSTANZA / THE TIMES-PICAYUNEMax Bernardi, float painter, at Mardi Gras World in New Orleans

Her large-scale work is on display at the Audubon Zoo and Aquarium, the Magnolia Mansion Bed and Breakfast, and it will be rolling down St. Charles Avenue at Carnival time.

Watch for it in Bacchus, which rolls Sunday, Feb. 19 at 5 p.m.; Orpheus, which is on Lundi Gras, Feb. 20, at 6 p.m. Both parades follow the Uptown route.

Q: What kind of artistic background do you have?

A: Ever since I was really young, I had a fascination with murals, and I always wanted to be a mural painter. I guess I always wanted to paint big. I went to the Atlanta College of Art for a year, and I had a boyfriend who encouraged me to intern on films, so I learned something about scenic painting. And from there, I started doing work for conventions, back when convention booths actually had hand-painted faux-finishes and stuff like that, and some murals for museums, in Atlanta. But the work was sort of all very dry and had an industrial feeling to it, and I got the notion that if I came to New Orleans I would have the opportunity to do work that was more creative.

Q: How did you get into float painting, once you moved to New Orleans?

A: When I first moved to New Orleans, the place everyone told me I could probably get a job was working for the Kern float builders. So almost the first day I came to the city, I interviewed with Barry Kern. But instead of having me paint floats at first, he hired me for the sculpture division, painting sculpture pieces for casinos like the Orleans in Las Vegas. I painted three giant alligators playing musical instruments for their lobby.

Q: Do any of the signature floats you work on change from year to year, or do they just get freshened up?

A: This year for the Baccha-Gator, they’re going for a different image. The marsh grass blended in too much with the alligator on the top, so they had me repaint the sides with a harlequin pattern in a lighter and darker shade of purple, and then paint giant Mardi Gras beads to look like they were draped across the sides. And they’ve added some dimensional pieces too, like a gigantic Mardi Gras mask and some beads that light up from inside. And we’re repainting the king’s float that Will Ferrell will be riding on to look like classic white marble.

Q: How does the process of painting a float work?

A: The first challenge that any float painter faces is to take the sketch from the designer and draw it out on this gigantic lumpy surface. You only get the sketch for one side, and then you have to reverse it for the other side. You have sticks of charcoal, which you sometimes stick into the end of a bamboo pole to extend it and it becomes a gigantic drawing wand. You stand back from the float with the sketch in your hand and multiply it 20 times, and try to draw everything in proportionally. Every single float painter that I’ve ever known has told me that the scariest thing they’ve ever faced is walking up to that float when it’s completely white and they think to themselves, “How in the world am I going to pull this off?”

The Peel Region, which includes Dawesville, Mandurah, Dwellingup and Pinjarra, has a number of outdoor activities for travellers looking to raise their heart rate.

Everything you need to know about Mandurah and Peel Region:FAMILY FOCUS SUN FOOD AND WINE

First stop for the adrenaline junkies is the Harvey Estuary for a jetski ride. Nautical Adventures and Stag Watersports provide the watercraft for visitors to jump on and the idea is to see the coastline at exhilarating speed and from a different perspective.

Nautical Adventures is the only ski hire company in Perth and Mandurah to offer ocean skiing and skiers can follow the specially designed Indian Ocean course which guarantees to show each person a close up view of the estuary dolphins.

Nautical Adventures has two tours available for the jet skis; The Awesome Dolphin Spotting Tour and the Extreme Dolphin Sighting Tour.

The Awesome Dolphin Spotting Tour is a flat water tour which starts from Bouvard Marina and takes each skier along the Dawesville Channel into Australia’s biggest inland waterway, the Harvey Estuary. Travelling into the Peel Estuary, travellers will see some of the many dolphin pods which inhabit the area, and Nautical Adventures guarantee a sighting.

The Extreme Dolphin Sighting Tour takes visitors on an ocean ski tour which circumnavigates the Mandurah island. Skiers head out into open water in the Indian Ocean, bouncing off the open water swell and travelling along the Mandurah coastline with plenty of bird and other wildlife for skiers to see while on the tour.

Stag Watersports also offers jet ski tours from Estuary Road Dawesville, just 14km from the Mandurah city centre and jet ski hire in the Harvey Estuary.

The estuary is an ideal place for jet skis because it offers smooth calm cruising water even when the ocean is rough. Stag has a fleet of Yamaha jet skis which offer enough performance for the casual user as well as proficient stability and safety to get the whole family involved.

Stag also offer self-drive tours which are guided by one of the Stag Watersports staff. The one hour tour takes a group, of no more than four people on a high speed estuary crossing to Pelican Island and then on a slow cruise around the island and surrounding area to see the wildlife. The return journey includes some circuit cruising and some freestyle riding. This tour is available for $195 per Jet Ski.

The two-hour tour also includes the high speed estuary crossing but passes Pelican Island to enter the river mouth. Skiers are then taken on a slow cruise up the Murray River to see the sights and the wildlife.

This is followed by a cruise past the riverside properties and a tie up at the jetty in front of the Pelican Café for lunch. After lunch the tour takes skiers back to the estuary for the high crossing and some circuits and free styling. The two hour tour is available for $295 per Jet Ski.

FISHING

Travellers looking for something less motorised in the Peel region also have options.

For those who like to get in a spot of fishing, Mandurah is the place to be. If the jetty and canals are too tame then maybe a fishing charter is the way to go.

Port Bouvard Charters offers deep sea fishing charters from South of Falcon at the East end of the Dawesville Channel. Fishing enthusiasts will be treated to a full day on the ocean aboard the spacious 55ft conquest Blue Lightning where all rods, bait and tackle are provided.

Port Bouvard Charters has been fishing the region for nine years and charter participants could be lucky enough to catch fish including dhufish, breaksea cod, pink snapper, red snapper, queen snapper and fox fish. Breakfast, lunch and snacks are provided as well as refreshments and any prize catches will be bagged and tagged to take home.

More Port Bouvard Charters information is at portbouvardcharters.com.au.

PADDLING

While in the Peel region a paddle on the water is a good way to get some fresh air, see some wildlife and get some exercise. Located on the western foreshore, next to Kings Carnival, Kayaks 4 U offer canoes and kayaks for hire and purchase. Single person kayaks are available for $20 per hour and double kayaks are available for $35 per hour.

Travellers can hire a kayak and take on a section of the Murray River and to end the adventure paddlers can stop in at the historic Ravenswood Hotel for a pub lunch.

Another option for paddling on the Murray River is to hire a range of different water vessels from Ravenswood Adventures. From the Ravenswood Hotel base visitors can hire kayaks, canoes, pedal boats and dinghies to experience the wildlife and scenery. While on the water, paddlers can drop in at the Peel Zoo or Pelicans Café for lunch.

Both venues are accessible from the water so travellers can land their vessel for a break from the paddling. The hobby kayaks also have inbuilt pedals to give the upper body a break from all the paddling.

THRILLS

If kayaking, deep sea fishing or jet skiing does not quite suffice on a trip to the Peel Region then abseiling, skydiving or white water rafting might be the way to go.

Dwellingup Adventures caters for a range of outdoor activities and the pick of the bunch is white-water rafting. The 12km trip takes on a 4m drop and grade two and three rapids as well as gentle paddling through the forest.

For a land based experience, Dwellingup Adventures can organise school and corporate group abseiling at Nanga Bush camp. Available for groups of 20 or more the abseiling experience is available for a three hour session or the whole day.

Travellers looking for something that is sure to make the hairs stand on end should head to the WA Skydiving Academy for a tandem skydive. The academy, on Pinjarra Williams Road, offers Mandurah beach jumps and jumps over the city of Perth. Jumpers will be treated to spectacular views of the WA coastline from Pinjarra, Mandurah and Perth to Rottnest Island.

Accommodation for an overnight stay is available at the Pinjarra Drop Zone and travellers intending to stay can bring a pillow and sheets or a sleeping bag for the bunk room which houses overnight guests.

Jumping is available seven days a week depending on numbers and the prices vary depending on the height of the jump and the amount of time in freefall. The jump heights range from 6000ft (1828m) to 14,000ft (4267m) and freefall times range from 10 seconds to 60 seconds. Prices depend on the freefall time, height of the jump and the location.

·Full details can be found at waskydiving.com.au or at 1300 13 78 55.

Mandurah and the Peel region are ideally summer travel destinations. Featuring many water-based activities and outdoor experiences the coastal location means beach visits, harbour strolls and physical activity. In the cooler months, white water rafting is better given the higher water levels and faster, more action packed experience.
