[Chelsea] Andre Villas-Boas reject rumours about Drogba’s Team talk

1329892147 61 [Chelsea] Andre Villas Boas reject rumours about Drogbas Team talk19 February, 2012, 12:39 pm

Villas-Boas dismissed the claims that Didier Drogba had conducted the half-time team talk. Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas introduced Drogba at half-time, and the Ivory Coast international appeared to give his men a pep-talk before they emerged for the second half. It was later suggested to Villas-Boas by sections of the media that Drogba had given his own team-talk, something that angered the 41-year old Blues manager.

“This is ridiculous. Why would Didier be doing half-time team talks?” questioned the Portuguese. “It is ridiculous. I will not comment on this story. It is ridiculous.

“We needed a target man, to lay off the long balls and go more direct, so I made the change. I’m not concerned with Fernando Torres’ physical form – not at all. Eventually a goal will give him extra mental stimulus and then he’ll be a different player for sure.

“The desire was there, the ambition. Birmingham matched us in that sense, and the goal inspired them to a draw.”

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle or Sunderland: Who will win the battle for fourth? (Squarefootball :: original football articles)

1329870547 14 Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle or Sunderland: Who will win the battle for fourth? (Squarefootball :: original football articles)

The Champions League is the competition that clubs want to take part in for many reasons. The drama, the prestige, the money one receives for being involved in it. It’s such a sought-after competition and this term the race for the Champions League is even more complex than previous ones, with certain teams undergoing transition and others excelling beyond all expectation.

Manchester City and Manchester United look like they will battle it out with Spurs likely to finish third, but with Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle all fighting it out for fourth place – and let's not rule out Sunderland just yet – where will they finish come May?

With 14 games of the season remaining there are a number of points to be won and lost before the curtain comes down on another action-packed Premier League season, but who will be starting next season with Champions League football?

Liverpool

Not this year, I’m afraid. Liverpool have scored just 28 goals – less than Fulham and Aston Villa – and though profligacy is a word Liverpool fans probably cannot stand to hear, it is so true. And this is even more depressing for them considering how watertight their defence is this season, having conceded just 21 goals, which is the best in the league.

Luis Suarez’s return will provide an extra boost but this year is most likely to be added to the ‘evolution’ category. Liverpool are not a bad side by any stretch of the imagination, just one that looks as though they aren’t quite assertive or assure of themselves yet. As the term draws to a close, it’s probably only the cups that will satisfy Liverpool fans lust for glory.

Sunderland

Twenty-two points in 10 games compared to Bruce’s record of 11 points from 13 means they are by far the form team in the league. The Black Cats have swept the league for points since Martin O’Neill’s arrival. The cynic and overall chances tell us that there is no chance Sunderland will gain Champions League football, but the optimist cheers them on. The overwhelming likelihood is the ‘honeymoon’ period will fade, but Sunderland can note not only that stranger things have happened, but under O’Neill they might not be too far off the top four in the distant future.

Chelsea

Chelsea should in all honesty be considered the favourites for fourth. Villas-Boas is in charge of a transitioning team and fresh blood is needed in the summer to mould the team into his youthful, exciting image. The Blues knew that this day was coming but while doubts over their title-challenging aspirations are there, consolation must come in the form of another year of European football. They are naturally the strongest out of the sides gunning for the position: with Drogba to return soon and key players such as the mesmerising Juan Mata and Daniel Sturridge, if I was a betting man then the Blues would receive my backing. Though with Newcastle just a point behind, inconsistency and wilting against teams like United cannot be tolerated as the season enters the nitty-gritty.

Arsenal

It’s been a strange, up and down season for the Gunners. But we all knew it would end up with them needing massive performances to gain fourth. After going on a storming undefeated run which included gritty battles back against the likes of Chelsea, it was rumoured – even wished – that the new mentality around the Emirates was there to be caught. With a new way of finding results it seemed Arsenal might just have a few tricks up their sleeves.

As it is, they are behind Newcastle and Chelsea but arguably they need Champions League qualification even more than those sides. While Newcastle’s ascent is completely unexpected and Chelsea’s transition was always on the cards, it has been seven long years since a trophy found its way to the Emirates and European football has been quelling the majority of the angered voices at the club – one wonders what will happen to the likes of Van Persie if this year they fall short. And you also wonder whether Arsenal are strong enough to fight back once their grip on fourth has gone, as Spurs and City rise and Chelsea and Liverpool will improve.

Arsenal’s season depends on it, but with inconsistent displays against Swansea and Fulham, points dropped, and Spurs, City, Sunderland, Chelsea and Toon all to play, I doubt their strength and squad depth to claw CL football this year, especially when they have taken so few points in their games against other members of the top six.

Newcastle

Why not? I refuse to do a disservice to Newcastle any more. We have played 24 rounds of the league this season and still they are fifth with 42 points, two and three more than Arsenal and Liverpool, respectively. The egos and bigger names were disposed of in the summer and talented yet youthful, lower-key signings were made on the cheap as part of their new policy.

And by God it has worked. Cabaye, the free signing Demba Ba, Chieck Tiote a year ago: Newcastle are entering one of the most important periods in their history for some time. With new-boy Papiss Demba Cisse taking some weight off Ba, and the squad having a stuck-together intensity driven by the rejuvenated Pardew, Newcastle are serious contenders for fourth and have excellent chances. And what better way to send the rest of the league that message when they face Spurs this Saturday?

Chelsea are currently in the driving seat but they, along with Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle, have all dropped points. Can Sunderland come up on the rails and creep in? Can Arsenal finally get things right on a consistent basis to sneak in or will Kenny Dalglish be able to turn Anfield in a place to fear again?

The race for fourth is going to be an interesting one between now and the end of May but who will seal a top four spot? We'd love to hear from you.

Auctions can be held by the state, county, marshal, sheriff or any other governing body. Taking precautions can prevent problems on the road and can make it easier if you do get stuck. This would be done by telling like-minded people about a trip and convincing them to go with you. The voices in my head tell me that I might want to have a view about travel. Sometimes there's also a time limit - for instance, if you purchase insurance within 21 days of booking your trip, they will cover medical events related to pre-existing conditions, while if you wait beyond the 21 days, then pre-existing conditions are excluded. Why International Travel Planning Can Be More Frustrating Than Fun Id say our recent trip to Honduras and on to Paraguay started out with mostly frustration and very little fun. EndSleigh: Endsleigh is one of the most popular winter sport travel insurance companies because they don't just cover ski and snowboard travel insurance but a wide array of winter sports. Now they're off to Never Never Land. Perhaps I should not confront that as much as humanly possible. As well as stating the obvious, that those who cant afford travel insurance cant afford to travel, the site gives some eye-opening statistics. In recent years we've holidayed in the Bahamas, Venezuela, Thailand, Mexico, Senegal and San Francisco. It isn't my binding situation. Trip insurance through the supplier (cruise line, tour operator) is fine, but if there is any type of problem such as a bankruptcy or strike, the supplier cannot insure itself against such things.

Think Puglia launches brand new villas ready for 2012 season Think Puglia has added 5 stunning villas to their portfolio for the 2012 season: Scale Nove, Bosco degli Ulivi, Trullo Terra Dolce, Ai Trulli and Rosa Marina. As with all the company’s villas, these new arrivals are available exclusively through Think Puglia.

Scale Nove is the ultimate panoramic sea-front villa situated in the old town centre of the gorgeous Gallipoli. Founder Rossella says: “It’s a unique proposition; possibly the only flat in Gallipoli available for holiday rental of this quality and attention to detail. We fell in love with the amazing views you get from the rooms and of course the amazing roof-top terrace. It’s great to be able to walk to a variety of good restaurants and bars, and also to the local beach for a swim in the morning.”Bosco degli Ulivi is a stylish, contemporary, architect-designed retreat near the fabulous beaches of south-west Salento in Morciano di Leuca. Founder Rossella says: “You can see it has been conceived and furnished by a good architect and a photographer. We loved the interior design, the volume of light inside and the layout. You can immediately imagine yourself there with your children or with another couple, for a very easy and relaxing holiday. Very peaceful.”Trullo Terra Dolce, situated in Ostuni is a stylish, comfortable trullo in a superb location with a great pool. Founder Rossella says: “It’s incredibly charming; it reflects the soul of its well-travelled and artistic owners. We loved the grounds, with open views, and the incredibly clever way the trulli have been restored.”Ai Trulli, situated in Cisternino is a charming pair of restored trulli immersed in the beautiful Valle d’Itria. Founder Huw says: “It’s extremely private and has wonderful views. The designers have made amazing use of the quirky spaces of the original trullo buildings to create a property with great warmth.”   Rosa Marina in Ostuni is a contemporary villa with direct beach access and a panoramic sea-view roof terrace. Rossella and Huw say: “We fell in love with the gorgeous sea views you get as you enter the house from the garden. You can walk bare foot from the house to the sandy beach for a morning swim and to the restaurant on the beach for lunch.”Huw & Rossella Beaugié, the founders of The Thinking Traveller, still personally select all new villas. Huw says, “we accept only a very small proportion of the properties offered to us. Each villa we take on has to meet our stringent criteria and add something new and unique to our portfolio as a whole”.

Good luck replacing Frank Lampard

Bobby McMahon is the lead analyst for FOX Soccer Report, airing nightly at 10:00 p.m. ET on FOX Soccer Channel.

This season we have seen a number of Premier League clubs fall in love with older players. Paul Scholes’ shock return to Old Trafford, Thierry Henry on loan at Emirates and Brad Friedel’s move and subsequent excellent displays for Spurs all support the notion that when pressed, some managers will opt for "been there, done that" players rather than the often naive enthusiasm of youth.

Chelsea are running counter to that trend. The numerous managers that have followed in the footsteps of Jose Mourinho have pretty much relied on the same core group of players The Special One assembled during his time at Stamford Bridge. But it seems that the Chelsea brains trust has now bought into the notion that if you don’t embrace change, decay is inevitable.

During the summer Andre Villas-Boas became the latest to enter the revolving door to the Chelsea manager’s office. Clearly his mandate is to retool the team and to move older players on.

Nicolas Anelka has already headed east, while speculation continues about the future of Didier Drogba. Other players such as Ashley Cole, John Terry, and Florent Malouda are all on the other side of 30.

Frank Lampard also fits into the grouping, turning 34 this summer. This season, Lampard has seen his game time cut dramatically by injury (a calf problem has him doubtful for Sunday’s match against Manchester United) but also, for the first time in many a season, he has not always been the manager’s first choice.

With every appearance on the bench – and sometimes in the stands – the rumor mill has cranked up another notch. Manchester United was rumored to be ready to take Lampard to Old Trafford – more a product of a fertile imagination than a real possibility. The "Lampard to LA Galaxy" chat is more gossip currently getting some play.

But with all talk of the present and of what the future might hold, it’s easy to forget how good a player Frank Lampard has been for Chelsea. Simply put, Lampard has given Chelsea something that no other Premier League club has had over the last decade – a consistent scoring threat from midfield.

Lampard is a goal short of hitting double figures in the Premier League for the ninth consecutive season. Starting in 2003-04 with 10 goals, he has recorded 13, 16, 11, 10, 12, 22, and 10 in the preceding Premier League seasons.

BY THE NUMBERS: FRANK THE TANK

Going into this third season at Chelsea, Frank Lampard’s high for goals scored as seven, a level reached in each of his final two seasons with West Ham. Since, his lowest output is 10 goals, a plateau he’s set to eclipse this season.

Season GP G 2003-04 38 10 2004-05 38 13 2005-06 35 16 2006-07 37 11 2007-08 24 10 2008-09 37 12 2009-10 36 22 2010-11 24 10 2011-12 20 10

Since the turn of the century, there have been other midfield players who have stepped up from time to time. In 2002-03 Robert Pires and Paul Scholes managed 14 goals each, with Pires matching that total in each of the next two seasons. Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard was prolific in 2008-09 with 16 goals, and other Chelsea players like Gus Poyet (11 in 2000-01), Zola (14 in 2002-03) and Malouda (13 goals last season and 12 the season before) have also had outstanding seasons.

But no midfield player (and no striker for that matter) can come close to Lampard’s consistency. And it is not only his goal scoring but the mileage he has covered over the years. Only twice since the 1997-98 season has he appeared in fewer than 30 Premier League games – in 2007-8 and 2010-11, he made 24 appearances each season.

His record in European play is also outstanding. His 23 Champions League goals place him in the top 20 all-time scorers in Europe’s premier club competition.

But there are detractors, and they usually focus on three areas – the number of goals that come from penalties and deflections, his performances for England, and his scoring record against the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal.

On close inspection the criticisms are paltry when placed in the larger context. About a quarter of Lampard’s goals may have come from the spot, but nonetheless, someone has to finish the job. What’s more, when have you heard anyone diminishing Alan Shearer’s goal tally? The percentage of Shearer’s goals from penalty kicks isn’t much less than Lampard’s.

Deflections? If you don’t buy a ticket you can’t win the lottery, and it pretty much runs the same way for shooting and goals – deflections or not.

The numbers don’t support the notion of an ineffective player at international level either. Twenty-three goals from 90 appearances puts Lampard just three goals behind Bryan Robson, who is commonly regarded as one of the best, if not the best, box-to-box midfielder ever produced by England.

A better case can perhaps be made in relation to his scoring record against Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool. Seventy-nine appearances have brought 10 goals, which is way below his average. Nonetheless, a goal every eight games from midfield against your biggest rivals is not too shabby and stands favorably in comparison to other top class midfield players.

So as the sun begins to surely set on his career at Stamford Bridge, the chatter about who will be Chelsea’s next Frank Lampard will only grow louder.

Good luck, Chelsea, because you will need it. Players like Frank Lampard are rarely if ever truly replaced.

A ‘reimagined’ Roman Country House buried by Mt Vesuvius in A.D. 79 – In Malibu

To me, Malibu conjures up memories of my youth; Beach Boys and Surfin’ Safari; movies and errant movie stars. In happily accepting Mike Abraham’s invitation to visit the Getty Italian Villa in Malibu yesterday, I was not expecting to find a museum of priceless Greek and Roman antiquities, all housed in a first-century Roman country-house.

In my travels, I visit so many spectacular ruins with hidden stories of centuries past. I listen carefully to guides’ descriptions trying to imagine how they looked, and to put them into a context of life at the time. I am not so interested in archaeological digs like Pompeii, Axum, or Leptis Magna – mounds of stones representing outer walls, and channels in the dirt don’t resonate. I hear more about sewerage systems in these than anything else. No wonder I’m turned off.

But, here in Malibu, Paul Getty, son of the oil tycoon, has ‘reimagined’ what was uncovered of an old Roman country house in Herculaneum buried by the eruption of Mt Vesuvius in A.D. 79. He has used architectural details based on elements drawn from other ancient Roman homes in the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum to faithfully recreate the 2,000 year-old Villa dei Papiri here – on a hillside reaching up from Malibu Beach on the Bay of Santa Monica. The site closely resembles its original location next to Mt Vesuvius on the Bay of Naples, right down to the old scented Roman pine trees.

The visit is of interest to me from many perspectives. I feel I am ‘touching’ history. The only thing missing is the people. An integral feature of any Roman home is the gardens, and here Getty has recreated four with plants, bronzes and decorative motifs, as they would have been all that time ago. And of course, there’s the Museum, so well organised and presented that viewing the priceless artefacts from his extensive collection is a breeze.
