Reds Caravan vies for Columbus' allegiance

1329916165 95 Reds Caravan vies for Columbus' allegiance

COLUMBUS, Ohio — When it comes to its baseball allegiances, Columbus is a city that sits on the proverbial fence. Fixed in the center of the Buckeye State, its citizens are pulled in two directions — north to Cleveland for the Indians, and south towards Cincinnati for the Reds. The latter were the ones the Reds wanted to thank on Saturday during the northern leg of the 2012 Reds Caravan. As for the former, the Cincinnati club wouldn’t mind convincing them to switch sides, too. “It’s a swing city, really,” Reds chief operating officer Phil Castellini said during a stop at Polaris Fashion Place mall in Columbus. “It has historically been Reds country. You have to give them reasons to come south. Most of those reasons, hopefully, will be winning.” The Indians established an additional foothold in the area a few years ago when they added the Columbus Clippers as their Triple-A affiliate. But the Reds aren’t limiting their pursuit of Columbus fans to only a winter visit. As they have in past regular seasons, they are also holding a Columbus/Franklin County Night at Great American Ball Park on May 26, when Cincinnati hosts the Rockies. On the northern leg with Castellini were Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco, general manager Walt Jocketty, former Reds pitcher Tom Browning, Minor League outfielder Ryan LaMarre and broadcaster Thom Brennaman. Reds CEO Bob Castellini also dropped in to attend the Saturday stop in Columbus. “It’s always nice to get to see the fans and how many people come out for us and support us,” Mesoraco said. “It’s been a very good trip so far.” Approximately 500 fans descended to the section of the mall where the Reds held a question-and-answer session followed by autograph signings and pictures. Square in the heart of Ohio State territory was LaMarre, a former star baseball player for the University of Michigan. Awkward… “They might boo me once they announce that. It could be tough,” LaMarre joked before stepping on stage. Apparently a Wolverine could make friends (temporarily) with Buckeyes. There was no ill will shown, as all of the Reds in the contingent were warmly welcomed. Like at other stops along the caravan, there was considerable buzz about the rash of roster improvements made in the past month. Jocketty has traded for a new starting pitcher in Mat Latos, a reliever in Sean Marshall and brought in free agents like new closer Ryan Madson and outfielder Ryan Ludwick. The GM got to hear the feedback about the moves directly from the fans. “It’s a lot better when it’s positive,” Jocketty joked. “It’s been good. I enjoy listening to people. You have fans that are real avid fans. You can tell they’ve been fans since they were little kids. They’re excited about our organization. People were so dismayed for a while.” For Mesoraco, the Reds’ No. 1 prospect as ranked by MLB.com — who could catch regularly in the Majors this season — it’s the first time he’s been one of the main attractions on a caravan after being on the trip the past couple of years. “I get more questions now, it seems like,” Mesoraco said. “In the past when I was with Brandon [Phillips], he’d get all the questions. More people know who I am, I guess. A few years ago, some people would ask, ‘Who are you?’ There are some very knowledgeable fans out there that know stuff you wouldn’t think that they would. It’s fun to see some of those people.” The northern leg made stops in Athens, Ohio, on Thursday, Marietta, Ohio, and Parkersburg, W.Va., on Friday and was headed towards western Ohio for stops in Findlay and Lima later on Saturday. The group wraps up its tour on Sunday in Dayton. “We were blown away with Redsfest this year and how many folks turned out for that. We continue to be pleased with these stops,” Phil Castellini said. “They’re great so far. The other routes have had huge crowds as well.”

Epitaph: Man traveled country to broaden horizons

1329914958 17 Epitaph: Man traveled country to broaden horizons

Editor’s Note: Every life has a story. In this column,we pay tribute to people who have died recently.

Ernest Gobeille Jr. made almost every state in the union hishome, at least for one night.

The 76 year-old Queensbury man died Jan. 2 of cancer.

Upon his retirement, “Ernie” and wife Jan bought a fifth wheeltrailer, hitched it to a truck, and traveled the United States. Before they could actually record a state’s visit on their map, however, the couple had a special rule: They had to have campedthere.

Touring the U.S. was just part of Ernie’s retirement goal. Afterleaving Travelers Insurance Co., he set out to experience somethingdifferent every five years.

“His thought was, ‘You need to do new things, you need newideas; it stimulates your mind and it keeps you fresh,’” Jansaid.

And so, between 1995 until his health began to deteriorate a fewyears ago, Ernie took up motorcycling, trained two Australianshepherds as therapy dogs and crisscrossed the country severaltimes, staying in hundreds of campsites with Jan and dogs Minnieand Chili.

“Ernie wanted to always have things to do and meet so manydifferent people. You weren’t traveling in your bridge group oryour country club. You meet all kinds of people when you travel,”Jan said.

Ernie had always loved to drive, according to Jan, and when theyfirst met Ernie drove alone from Long Island to the Rocky Mountainsin a Pontiac Tempest. In those early years, however, his idea ofcamping hadn’t yet evolved to include comfortableaccommodations.

“He would have a cot and he would put a tarp on the top of thedoor so that when he shut the tarp into the car, the tarp drapedover his cot,” Jan recalled.

The first trip the couple took in Ernie’s retirement was toPaducah, Ky., so Jan could attend a quilt show.

They planned their trips around sightseeing adventures likeMystic Seaport in Connecticut, the mansions in Newport, R.I., or acivil war site in Mississippi. The couple saw the northern rim ofthe Grand Canyon in Arizona and Yellowstone National Park inWyoming.

Jan said seeing the country in the manner they did was unique, but because she liked to “stay put” for some of the time, Erniewould arrange for them to visit one southern state every spring forthree or four weeks at a time. He would meet up with a bicyclinggroup while Jan brought her sewing machine and worked on herquilts.

Ernie was still in good health when in 2010 the couple realizedthey hadn’t yet been to Oregon, California, Washington, Nevada andIdaho. Jan asked Ernie if completing the map was still on his”bucket list,” and they finished up their journey from August toOctober.

Through the 15 years on the road, they also took caravan toursto Canada and Mexico and camped in Alaska. Ernie and Jan actuallyvisited all 50 states but the visit to Hawaii wasn’t officiallyrecorded on their map.

“We didn’t camp there,” Jan said.

Gypsies given permission to expand pitches in Great Braxted

1329890961 84 Gypsies given permission to expand pitches in Great Braxted

A MOTHER of two says she is forced to have a gypsy site in a field next to her family home because of the council’s failings.

The site, off Lea Lane in Great Braxted, was granted permission for more caravans by the Planning Inspectorate last Monday.

  1. NEW SITE: Land that has been allocated for travellers’ caravans

After months of appeals from residents, the inspector came down on the side of the travellers.

Annie Hopkins, who lives in Lea Lane and is the organiser of the village’s Residents Against Inappropriate Development group, said she is angry about the council’s lack of clear policy on traveller sites.

She said: “Unfortunately one of the main reasons this has gone through is because Maldon District Council has no strategic plan for traveller and gypsy sites.

“The inspector said that the main reason it was being allowed was because of the serious failure of Maldon District Council – not because the site is suitable.”

The new site will include space for a travelling caravan, space for a static caravan and a utility block. It will add to the 11 permanent pitches already there.

Mrs Hopkins, who has two sons, said: “We have always co-existed peacefully with the travellers but over recent years the site has expanded quite a lot – now it has come within 10ft of our house.

“Now we have said enough is enough.”

Many councils have adopted what is known as a Core Strategy, in which criteria for the location of gypsy sites are set out to guide allocations and meet unexpected demand. Maldon District Council chose not to adopt one.

The original planning application had been opposed by the council in May 2011, but the Planning Inspectorate allowed the appeal due to the council’s lack of clear policy.

“There are no sanctions against the council and the people who suffer are us,” said Mrs Hopkins.

“We can’t move, we can’t sell our house, our children’s pension fund has gone.

“I can’t build a house at the bottom of my garden for my elderly father, or for my children, but a new site is allowed there. It’s massively unfair.”

Mrs Hopkins said she feels as though the battle with the council is never-ending, describing their representation at hearings on the matter as “lamentable”.

She added: “It would have been laughable if it hadn’t been so tragic.”

Last year, as part of the Government’s Affordable Homes Programme, £60m was made available to local councils for the provision of gypsy pitches.

Mrs Hopkins said: “No one would take the money. If this was for sports facilities or education they would have bitten their hands off for it.

“Everybody’s frightened to be called racist when really they’re not. It’s rotten.”

Priti Patel, MP for Witham, has also attacked Maldon District Council for its lack of policy.

She said: “It’s such a serious issue. I will be taking it to the Secretary of State.”

“While recognising that we need to have enough site allocations for travellers, they have to come about in the rightful way, not this spurious route.”

Council leader John Archer said: “The position regarding the provision of gypsy and traveller sites in the district is being reviewed through the emerging Local Development Plan framework as agreed by the council in July 2011.

“While we note the views of Mrs Hopkins, this application has followed the due process with a decision made by the secretary of state through the Planning Inspector.”

One traveller, who did not wish to be named, said: “We’re outside of the village so we don’t really know what others think but we’re fine with it.”

Hungry Eye News:Is Britain Great? 3Launched atCornerhouse, Manchester

1329878947 50 Hungry Eye News:Is Britain Great? 3Launched atCornerhouse, Manchester

Cornerhouse is presenting the launch of Is Britain Great? 3, the third of Jan Williams’ and Chris Teasdale’s bestselling photography book series Is Britain Great? Both authors will be at the Manchester venue for a special presentation on their work followed by a book signing on Thursday 24 November 2011.

Is Britain Great? 3 contains poignant observations from The Caravan Gallery’s burgeoning archive, which depicts a land of contrast and contradiction that somehow manages to look both endearingly familiar and terrifyingly alien. The current financial climate, in a country dominated by supermarkets, is reflected in a high street battle between two imaginatively named shops, Mr Cheap and Mr Bankrupt, both of whom claim to be the cheapest. In 2008 readers of The News in Portsmouth could claim a dozen free doughnuts. In 2010 they were offered just the one.

Since 2000, Williams and Teasdale have travelled extensively in the UK and abroad documenting the reality and surreality of ‘the way we live today’. They take their art to the people by holding constantly changing exhibitions in a specially converted caravan that plays the role of art gallery, subversive visitor centre and mini social club on wheels.

The Caravan Gallery presents a thought provoking, sometimes tragicomic, view of Britain where individuality, defiance and absurdity flourish in the face of homogenisation and piecemeal regeneration schemes. The artists manage to find ‘beauty in the squalor’ and encourage their audience to do the same. ‘You couldn’t make it up’, ‘I’ve lived here all my life and never noticed that’ and ‘I wish I’d had my camera with me’ are typical responses to Caravan Gallery photos.

Is Britain Great? 3 is published by Cornerhouse in association with The Caravan Gallery and features essays from Sara-Jayne Parsons (Exhibitions Curator at the Bluecoat, Liverpool)and Dan Thompson (founder of the Empty Shops Network and co-founder of Culture on Wheels). Daniel Meadows of the Free Photographic Omnibus has the last word on the back cover.

The launch of Is Britain Great? 3 is part of Cornerhouse’s Art Night which will also see the launch of Sketch-O-Matic, a live art photo booth, the latest Cornerhouse Project featuring a range of affordable prints and artwork from Salford’s Suite Studios and a special screening of the vintage Tony Hancock comedy The Rebel.

A visit from the Twins

1329852548 23 A visit from the Twins

By Paul DownerCommunity Editor Published: Wednesday, February 1, 2012 4:22 PM CST By Paul Downer Community EditorFor baseball fans Jan. 25 was a day to circle on the calendar, particularly for students at Central Schools in Norwood Young America. That’s when the Twins Winter Caravan rolled through town, giving local residents a chance to interact with a number of Twins personnel in an informal setting. Hall of Fame pitcher and current Twins broadcaster Bert Blyleven presided over a gathering that included Twins centerfielder Denard Span, rambunctious third baseman Danny Valencia and backup catcher Drew Butera. The stop included a gathering in the school auditorium emceed by Blyleven, who talked about last season and posed questions to the players for the benefit of the audience. Later, the Twins fielded questions from students in attendance and tossed out prizes. One student asked the players what they would be doing if they weren’t in professional baseball.Valencia drew laughs by first saying he would be a model, then shifting gears to say he could be a used car salesman or a lawyer because he has the “gift of gab” and is “good at manipulating.”Blyleven quipped that he would have been a very good policeman or fireman because he would have had fun with the siren.Butera noted that, since he had been to college for communications and broadcasting, he probably would have taken over Blyleven’s current job on the television, while Span said he would likely be involved in sports somehow, perhaps as a physical therapist. Another student asked what the players did with their free time.Valencia, always fidgety, said he had spent six hours fishing the day before without catching a thing.”I’m never going back,” he vowed. After Span and Valencia said they enjoyed going to malls and shopping, Butera said he liked to go along and watch all the stuff they could buy. (Butera, known for his defensive prowess, had one of the lowest batting averages of any regular in the Major Leagues last year and was paid accordingly.)All three current Twins agreed that their favorite player growing up was Ken Griffey Jr., though Butera changed his answer to Kirby Puckett just to be different. When Blyleven asked if Butera why his favorite player wasn’t Butera’s father Sal, who caught for the Twins during their 1987 World Series season, Butera simply cleared his throat and tugged at his collar in mock embarrassment, as if to suggest that was a ridiculous suggestion. He then clarified that he was too young to remember much of his light-hitting father’s playing days.Later, Blyleven explained his “hot foot” trick to students, describing how he used to light his teammates’ shoes on fire while they weren’t looking as a practical joke, then showed his salty side in fielding a pair of questions. He drew laughter and applause when a student asked if he was angry about having to wait so long to get into the Hall of Fame and he replied, “G-d— right I was angry.” And when another student asked how he would have pitched to Prince Fielder, who recently joined the division rival Tigers, he conferred with Butera about throwing it “high and tight” before muttering, “It’s hard to hit when you’re on your a–.”Following the assembly, the players gathered in the district office to speak with local radio affiliate KTWN and the student news station CNN (Central News Network) while a crowd of students gathered in the hallway outside to catch a close-up glimpse of the players through the office windows. In that fishbowl atmosphere, Valencia began to hop up and down and frantically fan his face like a teenage girl at a Beetles concert, while Butera stood in front of a window and simply stared back. With the exception of Span, who left early, each participated in an interview with the student news network. The last interview ended with a marriage proposal from the student host to Valencia, who happily pretended to put on a ring.Joking aside, the players talked about how they would like to forget last year’s 99-loss season and, in Span’s case, get over injury issues that limited their playing time. Span said he is feeling normal after a concussion limited him to about 40 games last season and added that he is taking part in normal baseball activities in preparation for the season. They also talked about the difficulty of seeing long-time Twins such as Michael Cuddyer, Jason Kubel and Joe Nathan leave for other teams during this offseason.”We wish them well except for when they play against us,” said Butera. Thinking about buying any static caravan? Then there are several things you should look at before you search. You must consider expenses, site services, plot placement and achievable rental revenue. On your day you look at the caravan the sun’s rays may end up being shining as well as the caravan, park amenities and costs might appear like the right option to your family. But before you decide to buy be sure you find out several vital information about your prospective holiday residence.

Firstly discover how much the website fees tend to be as this really is crucial. There is not any point taking a look at caravans on the park where you can’t afford your website fees. The recreation area may quote a price but there’s also insurance charges, gas as well as electricity and also VAT that may increase the fundamental site charges. You might consider booking out your own caravan you should definitely in use as possible easily help to make enough to pay for your website fees should you choose it appropriately. However, you have to know what you are carrying out before you rent your caravan and there are numerous pitfalls which can not be covered at length here. But when the park offer you to rent your caravan to suit your needs be cautious as a few parks put in a 20% surcharge, cleaning and also advertising costs after which then increase VAT together with all this that might not abandon you much at the conclusion. So you should be careful.

Find out if the park unwraps and closes as much parks provide 6 or even 10 30 days licenses. Make positive the recreation area is open when you wish to utilize it. If you might be have a new family you need to look carefully on the site amenities and ensure that they’re right to suit your needs and your kids. Check away the kids club, play places and ensure that there are usually no added costs for the children to utilize the amenities. Good recreational areas include totally free passes to utilize the facilities and that’s what an individual pay your internet site fees regarding. Usually for those who have a 6 berth caravan you ought to have 6 totally free passes for friends and family to utilize the site amenities. Conversely in case you are an upon the market couple as well as want any peaceful holiday make certain you choose a good quiet park that isn’t full regarding families as well as children in the course of holiday occasions.

Look carefully on the caravan dimensions, age as well as condition and be sure you get the best size caravan to your family. If you obtain a tiny caravan and find that you will be too cramped and also you can’t ask family or perhaps friends to keep you might regret this later. Ensure your caravan just isn’t too outdated as a few sites simply allow caravans under a specific age to stay on-site. Don’t end up being fooled into investing in a caravan which has only some years living before you must upgrade with a newer product or eliminate it from your website. You must carefully think about the plot website. If you might have young children you don’t want being too close to the club residence or basic walkway to be able to and from your clubhouse. Especially Static caravan in the course of peak occasions the golf club house is going to be open before early several hours and pleased holiday producers singing and also laughing on the way to their caravans every couple of minutes at night time can disturb everyone. Also ensure that you are not too much away from your facilities you want to make use of most. The finest plot position is generally somewhere during the playground. One more factor carefully will be double double glazed. Single glazing is okay in the summertime but in order to go away peak inside the spring and also autumn, as we all do, unless you might have double double glazed and satisfactory heating within the caravan it could be very chilly and unhappy.

Councillor Geoff Wells, who represents Woodingdean on Brighton and Hove City Council, said: “I am delighted that the Caravan Club of East Sussex has given generously to these two very deserving local causes.

“It was a real pleasure to host them in Woodingdean.

“They were well organised, with proper toilets, showers and other facilities.

“And unlike the previous unauthorised occupants of Happy Valley, they left the site in a perfect condition.”

Fellow Woodingdean Conservative councillor Dee Simson said: “If they are looking to repeat their stay next year, we, and I think most local residents, would welcome them back with open arms.”

Nate Bump and Rich Thompson didn't spend a lot of time on the open market this winter.

Thompson, a fan favorite at Coca-Cola Park, re-upped for a fifth season with the Phillies organization on Dec. 13, not long after the minor league free agency session began.

"Has it really been five years?" Steve Noworyta, the Phillies assistant minor league director, asked rhetorically. "Wow."

Bump signed back on for his third year in the organization on Jan. 9, although it sounds as if the decision was made long before his pen hit the contract.

"I didn't even entertain offers," Bump said.

The pair are two of the eight veteran IronPigs free agents the Phillies re-signed after last year's historic playoff season, and barring any bizarre circumstances this spring should be on the Opening Day roster.

For Bump, the decision came down to security and pride.

"I'm an hour down the road in West Chester, [and] I'm a Pennsylvania guy," he said at last month's IronPigs Charities banquet. I've always belt comfortable here.

"I have something to prove," Bump, an International League all-star in 2009, added. "The start of the season last year, those first few months, were pretty rough on me. I was trying to do too much. Now all I want to do is prove myself. i made some adjustments in the off-season instead of trying to make the adjustments to get back in the big leagues during the year, and I think it's going to pay off."

Bump realized that he might have had a tough job selling himself to another organization with his numbers from last year (5-9, 4.97).

"For me, to go somewhere else after the year that I had would've been an uphill battle, because you have to learn everybody and everybody has to learn you," said Bump, who did have a 3.14 ERA over his last 10 starts. "A lot of times it takes a full year to get that done. Me, I'm 35 years old, and [the Phillies] know what I'm capable of, and if I can prove I'm back in the that realm than I feel I have a better chance here than anywhere else."

Thompson pretty much has that same attitude.

"I'm in a situation here where I have a good rapore with the manager, and I get to play, and that's really all you can ask for," Thompson said. "You never know where a situation is going to lead, but I'm not going to beat someone out in spring training at 32 [years old]."

Both Bump and Thompson realize they're not going to be handed a roster spot. Seeking insurance for their major league rotation, the Phillies have brought in Joel Pinero, Dave Bush, and Pat Misch, and took a flyer on Scott Elarton, a former 17-game winner with Houston trying to resurrect his career.

With an opening for a fifth outfielder on the big league level — and just in case John Mayberry Jr. turns out to be a one-year wonder – the Phillies brought in Juan Pierre, Lou Montanez and Scott Podsednik.

"They signed some pretty good players," Thompson said. "You don't really worry about who your competition is, because you don't come to spring training any season without competition. Obviously they're going to sign people, so that's really nothing I worry about."

"There's that cherry-picking thing you can do, try to find the right organization, and I've seen it work for some guys, but not all the time," Bump said. "They're always going to be guys getting picked up at the last minute, halfway through camp, whatever. I'd rather be with a good team, a good organization that has a chance to win at the major league level, and go on from there."

There nearly was another returner fighting for a spot in the rotation.

Noworyta said the Phillies had a deal with Brian Bass to return, but Bass instead got a more lucrative offer to play overseas.

"We had an agreement with Bass but he didn't sign off it because he told me of the Korean situation, and I said that's fine," Noworyta said. "All along he told me about that job, and I'm happy for him. It's an opportunity for him to take care of his family financially."

Other than Bass, Noworyta said the Phillies basically got who they targeted.

"I think the ones we wanted to go after we went after early and we got them," he said, referring to the free agents on the IronPigs roster. "We targeted who we wanted, and it worked out."

One thing Bump and Thompson, along with the other returning IronPigs, have going for them is that so far in the four-year history of the team, none of the free agents re-signed have been let go in the spring.

"We're kind of an organization that doesn't sign a lot of guys for tryouts [in the spring]," Noworyta said. "We sign guys that we know can come in and help us either at Triple-A or the big leagues. to me, it leaves the organization with a bad taste when you have to bring someone in and then have to let them go."

As for some some other tidbits …

* Noworyta said first base should come down to incumbent Cody Overbeck or Matt Rizzotti, who had another strong season at Double-A. Overbeck, Noworyta said, played well in the Arizona Fall League, hitting .321 in 24 games.

"I think he realizes now what it takes to get there," he said of the converted third baseman, who was once the top right-handed power prospect in the system. "He knows he's got to step it up."

Throughout Overbeck's career he's always done well the season after he moves up a level. In 2010, after hitting .230 in 96 games at Clearwater following a promotion from Williamsport, Overbeck hit .302 with 11 homers in 58 games before moving up to Reading.

After hitting .255 with 13 homers in 78 games at Reading to finish that season, Overbeck began last year by hitting .275 with 18 homers in just 62 games before being promoted to the IronPigs, where he hit .275 with six homers in 68 games.

"It'll be interesting to see how he looks in camp," Noworyta said.

* Three years ago, Jason Donald came to the IronPigs as an up-and-coming shortstop, but the Phillies give him playing time at both second and third base to prepare him for life as a potential utility infielder.

Noworyta doesn't believe the same thing will happen this year with Freddy Galvis.

There have been strong indications that if Jimmy Rollins has to miss extended periods of time with injuries, Galvis would get the call to be the everyday shortstop.

"We were comfortable enough with what we saw in him to move Valdez," he said, referring to Wilson Valdez, Rollins' main back-up the past two seasons. "With Jimmy's health, we need to make sure he's ready at shortstop if needed."

* Noworyta will be keeping an eye on Carlos Rivero, the 23-year-old who was lost to Washington on a waiver claim when Rollins was re-signed.

For whatever reason, the Phillies elected to option Rivero off the 40-man roster (and risk losing him on waivers) instead of outfielder John Bowker, who wound up getting released anyway a few weeks later so he could sign with a team in Japan.

"We had a feeling that he would be claimed," Noworyta said of Rivero, whom the Phillies had claimed off waivers from Cleveland the previous winter.

Rivero, who played third after spending his career at short, hit .275 with a career-high 15 homers and 66 RBIs in 129 games at Reading. He showed glimpses of adjusting to Triple-A pitching at the end of a seven-game audition with the IronPigs in early August when he was shuffled back to Reading after Jack Cust was signed.

"I was excited about him because he was so young and he was starting to figure it out," Noworyta said. "It will be interesting to see how he does."

Had Rivero stayed, the IronPigs' third-base job likely would've been hist to lose next month.

* Despite the trades that have stripped some of the gems out of the farm system, Noworyta said the Phillies minor leaguers had a banner season in 2011.

"Over a five or six year period we lost somewhere around 28 or 30 players in trades. And you look at last year's season, there were five teams in our minor leagues in [playoff] contention," he said. "That's tough to do, because those 28 or 30 weren't just players, they were prospects in our system that other teams wanted.

"That's a credit to Marty [Wolever, the director of scouting] with his draft every year, and we're drafting low every year, to get quality players, the prospect-type players that makes everyone better. And then you filter in the free agents that we sign, the quality guys with the ability to help our prospects grow, and you see where the success comes from."
