PREMIER Jay Weatherill has shot down claims by restaurant and cafe owners that they will have no choice but to close on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve if new half-day public holidays are introduced.

Mr Weatherill was responding to warnings by members of Restaurant and Catering SA that they will be forced to close if those days are declared public holidays from 5pm to midnight, as part of proposed changes to the Holidays Act.The change would require employers to pay staff penalty rates of 250 per cent during those hours, which many businesses say would make it too expensive to trade on those nights.Concerned business included popular metropolitan restaurants, such as Lenzerhide and Windy Point Restaurant, and also regional operators such as Banrock Station winery.But Mr Weatherill argued such venues traded "profitably" on existing public holidays and "no sensible argument" had been made for why the new half-day holidays would be any different. "It’s pretty hard to swallow the argument that late at night on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve people are flocking to cellar-door wine tasting," Mr Weatherill said."Similarly, if people are spending hundreds of dollars on high-end dining or accommodation, it is a bit rough to suggest that they would miss a few extra dollars to compensate those people who are working so that they can have a good time."Restaurant and Catering SA chief executive officer Sally Neville told FiveAA Radio this morning many restaurants already close on public holidays.She warned the proposed new half-day holidays would "create an absolute black spot" in hospitality services "from Port Lincoln down to Mount Gambier and everywhere in between".

Kota Kinabalu: Over 100 participants from all around the world will take part in the 3rd Borneo Headhunters Hat (BHH) tournament which will be held be at the SUKMA fields in Kota Kinabalu at Mile 3.5, Jalan Tuaran on 25th February 2012.

Hailed as the world’s fastest growing sport of the new millennium, it combines many elements of other popular sports and is played using a plastic flying disc. Points are scored when the disc is caught within a designated area known as the ‘end zone’. The sport can be played in mixed teams of both male and female players who show their sporting prowess through an extraordinary display of fast cuts, skillful handling of the disc and well-timed blocks against opponents.

Tournament Director Dinoza Mahruf says, “The most unique aspect of Ultimate is the Spirit of the Game, which refers to the practice of uncommon sportsmanship and self-regulation on the field.

Any dispute over disc possession is resolved by the immediate two players involved without the need for an umpire or referee”.

A Hat tournament is played by individuals whose skills and abilities are rated and paired with corresponding teams. Often, players in a hat tournament have never met until the day of competition and have to adjust their usual game play to suit their new teammates, adding an extra dimension to the team dynamics of this fast-paced, exciting sport.

The participants this year will include Brunei, United States and United Kingdom, fellow Malaysians as well as home-grown Sabah players.

The reality is that Barbados offers a great cultural mix which, along with many other supporting factors, make this island a prime candidate for being the ‘go to place’ for high quality, cultural entertainment. Importantly, these supporting factors include a relatively safe environment with a low crime rate; and, with specific regard to events, very low incidents of lawlessness.

Barbados can supply an excellent range of accommodation, from simple guesthouses to 5-star properties and luxury villas. President Obama’s birth control “accommodation” was as politically successful as it was morally meaningless. It was nothing but an accounting trick that still forces Catholic (and other religious) institutions to provide medical insurance that guarantees free birth control, tubal ligation and morning-after abortifacients — all of which violate church doctrine on the sanctity of life.

The trick is that these birth control and abortion services will supposedly be provided independently and free of charge by the religious institution’s insurance company. But this changes none of the moral calculus. Holy Cross Hospital, for example, is still required by law to engage an insurance company that is required by law to provide these doctrinally proscribed services to all Holy Cross employees.

Nonetheless, the accounting device worked politically. It took only a handful of compliant Catholic groups — Obamacare cheerleaders dying to return to the fold — to hail the alleged compromise, and hand Obama a major political victory.

Before, Obama’s coalition had been split. His birth control mandate was fiercely opposed by such stalwart friends as former Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine and pastor Rick Warren (Obama’s choice to give the invocation at his inauguration), who declared he would go to jail rather than abide by the regulation. After the “accommodation,” it was the (mostly) Catholic opposition that fractured. The mainstream media then bought the compromise as substantive, and the issue was defused.

A brilliant sleight of hand. But let’s for a moment accept the president on his own terms. Let’s accept his contention that this “accommodation” is a real shift of responsibility to the insurer. Has anyone considered the import of this new mandate? The president of the United States has just ordered private companies to give away for free a service that his own health and human services secretary has repeatedly called a major financial burden.

On what authority? Where does it say that the president can unilaterally order a private company to provide an allegedly free-standing service at no cost to certain select beneficiaries?

This is government by presidential fiat. In Venezuela, that’s done all the time. Perhaps we should we call Obama’s “accommodation” Presidential Decree No. 1.

Consider the constitutional wreckage left by Obamacare:

First, its assault on the free exercise of religion. Only churches themselves are left alone. Beyond the churchyard gate, religious autonomy disappears. Every other religious institution must bow to the state because, by this administration’s regulatory definition, church schools, hospitals and charities are not “religious,” and thus have no right to the free exercise of religion — no protection from being forced into doctrinal violations commanded by the state.

Second, its assault on free enterprise. To solve his own political problem, the president presumes to order a private company to enter into a contract for the provision of certain services — all of which are free. And yet, this breathtaking arrogation of power is simply the logical extension of Washington’s takeover of the private system of medical care — a system Obama farcically pretends to be maintaining.

Under Obamacare, the state treats private insurers the way it does government-regulated monopolies and utilities. It determines everything of importance. Insurers, by definition, set premiums according to risk. Not anymore. The risk ratios (for age, gender, smoking, etc.) are decreed by Washington. This is nationalization in all but name. The insurer is turned into a middleman, subject to state control — and presidential whim.

Third, the assault on individual autonomy. Every citizen without insurance is ordered to buy it, again under penalty of law. This so-called individual mandate is now before the Supreme Court — because never before has the already inflated Commerce Clause been used to compel a citizen to enter into a private contract with a private company by mere fact of his existence.

This constitutional trifecta — the state invading the autonomy of religious institutions, private companies and the individual citizen — should not surprise. It is what happens when the state takes over one-sixth of the economy.

In 2010, when all this lay hazily in the future, the sheer arrogance of Obamacare energized a popular resistance powerful enough to deliver an electoral shellacking to Obama. Yet two years later, as the consequences of that overreach materialize before our eyes, the issue is fading. This constitutes a huge failing of the opposition party whose responsibility it is to make the opposition argument.

Every presidential challenger says he will repeal Obamacare on Day One. Well, yes. But is any of them making the case for why?

What does Greece’s recent economic turmoil mean for travelers? As of publication, there are no warnings issued by the U.S. Department of State against travel to Greece, and this year could, in fact, be an excellent time to go, as Greece travel deals are popping up like olive trees. TripAdvisor reports that hotel rates in popular Greece destinations have fallen by as much as 20 percent in the past year. The influx of bargains is a win-win for both locals and visitors, as a healthy tourism industry could help Greece revive its economy. According to Catharine Hamm of the Los Angeles Times, “Greece needs tourist dollars now more than ever to find its way out from under lest it default on its loans. Tourism is one of its leading industries, and that means you are apt to find bargains.”

Egypt 

Revolutions don’t make for an attractive vacation destination—but travel deals do. To counter a drop in demand due to Arab Spring unrest, providers are rolling out some incredible price reductions for Egypt travel. As of press time, we spotted offers like 50 percent off Egypt tours from luxury tour operator Abercrombie & Kent; this deal also includes complimentary travel insurance with select trips. Furthermore, Hotels.com lists Cairo as one of 10 worldwide destinations where luxury hotels cost the least (the average nightly rate for a five-star Cairo hotel came to $203 in 2011). If you’re comfortable traveling to a destination where there may be some civil disorder (we recommend purchasing travel insurance), you can book a once-in-a-lifetime luxury getaway to Egypt for pennies on the dollar.

Japan 

The tourism industry in Japan took a major hit after the catastrophic earthquake that struck almost a year ago, and it continues to lag. To bounce back, Japanese hotels and other travel providers have been offering deep savings on accommodations, attractions, and more in an attempt to lure international visitors. (Experts agree it’s now safe to travel to most of Japan, including the greater Tokyo area.) “Japan is still expensive, primarily because the yen is high against the dollar,” Chris Gray Faust, of Chris Around The World, told us in an email. “But hotels have been offering value-added specials to entice tourists back to the country. In Kyoto, for example, the Hyatt Regency Kyoto has been offering deals where if you buy one night, you get the second one for 50 percent, or a third night free with two nights paid,” she said. Moreover, spending money on a Japan vacation is a great way to support a nation that has endured a terrible tragedy and is still in the process of rebuilding.

Berlin 

This year, Berlin turns 775 and will open a new major international airport. And while the city is one of Europe’s best for museums, galleries, fashion, and culture, it offers more bang for your euro compared to major Western European destinations such as London, Paris, or Rome. Average nightly hotel rates in Berlin are just €72—that’s well below average prices for the aforementioned cities. And did we mention the exchange rate? The euro has been falling against the dollar, and economic problems in the euro zone, while calamitous for those who live in E.U. countries, could lead to better exchange rates for U.S. travelers.

New York City 

New York is the most expensive U.S. city to spend the night in, with average nightly hotel rates reaching $190.46 in 2011, according to data gathered from Hotels.com. But high hotel rates can couple with a wealth of free activities to strike an affordable balance for travelers to the Big Apple. City parks, music shows, galleries, breweries, famous stores, monuments, and museums that charge zilch abound in the city—you need only know where to look. We recommend browsing through the regularly updated listings on Time Out New York or reading this list of 40 free New York attractions from Lonely Planet. If you’re looking for even more savings, beat those notorious New York hotel rates by booking alternative accommodations on sites like Airbnb and Flipkey. We found one-bedroom apartment rentals in Manhattan listed on Airbnb for as little as $100 per night for high-season summer stays.

Hawaii 

It’s shaping up to be a good year for Hawaii, as more and more travelers are heading to the lush locale. (Can you blame them?) The Wall Street Journal reports that Hawaii tourism rates are at their highest levels since 2007, thanks in part to large advertising campaigns put forth by the local tourism board. As a consequence, one might expect prices for travel to this already-expensive destination to rise. Yet there are ways to try big-wave surfing, explore underwater lava caves, or dance the hula on the cheap this year. One cost-cutting tactic is to buy your big-ticket Hawaii flight from a discount airline; very soon, you’ll be able to do this. Hawaiian Airlines and JetBlue recently entered into a partnership agreement that will open up new routes to the Aloha State (this will also bring about the only nonstop flight connecting New York to Hawaii). United’s adding a new nonstop from Washington, D.C., as well. New routes usually amount to greater competition, which could work to push down fares to Hawaii in the coming year.

Alaska 

Alaska is enormous—it’s two times the size of Texas. And crossing hundreds or thousands of miles by plane, train, or automobile isn’t cheap. The solution? Set sail. Cruising is the most popular way to tour Alaska—and it may be the cheapest, too. The destination has been drawing more and more ships (Disney Cruise Line began its inaugural Alaska season in 2011) since the state’s government decreased head taxes on cruise-ship passengers. For an amazingly economical Alaska vacation, book a cruise during shoulder season. As of this publication, we spotted weeklong spring and fall Alaska cruises on our sister site Cruise Critic’s deals page on sale for as little as $569 per person.

Switzerland 

As the euro falls in surrounding countries, the franc holds steady; this would, it seem, make for a very expensive Switzerland vacation. However, with many travelers choosing neighboring destinations that offer better exchange rates, the local tourism industry has suffered. The good news? Travel providers are taking pains to make it more affordable to see Switzerland. This season, ski resorts have been offering free night’s stays and free skiing in an effort to draw more guests, reports OnTheSnow. And, as of press time, the Zurich Tourism Board was offering 20 percent off winter stays at a variety of local hotels. Of course, if you’re an American or a European, you’ll have to deal with an unfavorable exchange rate when traveling to Switzerland. But take advantage of a good travel deal or two and your Swiss vacation could be a lot cheaper than you might expect.

Cayman Islands 

Discount carriers like JetBlue and AirTran don’t fly to the Cayman Islands, and the destination is generally considered one of the most expensive in the Caribbean. So to access the islands’ blue waters and breezy beaches at a fraction of the price, veer off the beaten path. Skip the high-rise hotels that line the coast on Grand Cayman and go for a guesthouse or a villa on one of the Caymans’ smaller islands: Cayman Brac or Little Cayman. (There are no campsites on the Cayman Islands, so guesthouse lodging is likely the cheapest option you’ll find.) We spotted oceanfront guesthouses listed on the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism website for as little as $1,000 per week in high season—a more-than-fair price for a one-bedroom house that sleeps four or five people.
